You’ve heard a lot of good things about RightStart Math. Maybe you’ve been watching other families rave about RightStart Math for months. For years!
Maybe you’ve thought, “That looks amazing…but we’re already three years into math. Surely it’s too late now.” And yet, the hands-on component is so appealing. The games, rather than all those worksheets, fits your child to a T!
Can you switch into RightStart this late in the journey? Can your child adapt? Can you??
Short answer is YES! Let’s do this!!
The long answer is ABSOLUTELY YES!
We’ll take a moment to explore the long answer and see how you can do this and why you want to do this….
Why to Switch to RightStart Math
First of all, let’s address the “why” you want to switch to RightStart Math. This curriculum brings the joy for math back to your child’s life. It builds true understanding of math for your child.
Every year we hear from families who switch into RightStart after using another curriculum for several years—and they tell us they wish they had made the change sooner.
Sarah from TX says: “We used a couple of different math curricula that each had their pros and cons but I noticed over time that my kids weren’t retaining their math facts and were counting instead of visualizing quantities. As I considered switching curricula yet again, I decided to try RightStart Math. We’ve now been using it for 3 years and I’m so grateful we made the switch! My kids are retaining their math facts, counting less, and truly understanding math. I wish we’d started out with RightStart Math but I’m thankful we found it when we did and that my youngest (in preschool) will be able to have a strong math foundation from the beginning.”
Rather than pile on scads of worksheets, RightStart allows the child the explore and experience math with hands-on materials, like the Cotter Abacus, the math balance, and the fraction chart. Math facts practice is done through the card games. Math becomes a time to laugh, play, and learn together.
Secondly, RightStart Math creates an environment for the child to think. It’s not just sheer memorization. Strategies and a variety of approaches are introduced, allowing your child the opportunity to pick the method that works for their thinking.
Heather from CA says: “I was not confident in math before I started using RightStart Math with my children. I am thankful to report that I learned alongside my children and now consider math one of my strengths! My children also are very strong in math, thanks to RightStart. I attribute all this to how RightStart Math focuses on mental math and strong number sense by guiding students (and parents!) to visualize and internalize numbers and mathematical relationships. And the math games in each lesson are much more engaging than a worksheet too!”
How to Switch to RightStart Math
So how do you make the switch? How do you begin in the program when you’re halfway through your child’s elementary journey?
One of the biggest concerns parents have is, “Will my child miss important concepts?” Start by going to the Placement Test and see where your child should start. If your child seems to be between two levels, you can call us at 888.272.3291 or email our customer service team at info@RightStartMath.com
You do not need to start at the beginning. There are review lessons in the beginning of each level (other than Level A). These lessons, generally around ten for each level, will teach you and your child how to use the abacus and do a quick check that there are no holes in the child’s thinking. Here’s what Level D’s starting list of lessons looks like:
RightStart Math’s Level D has a strong focus on multiplication, along with simple division, problem solving, and a great start on fractions. Yet, notice how the review lessons make sure the student is comfortable with addition and subtraction while learning how to use the abacus?
The review lessons covers concepts that your child already knows, but from a fresh perspective the develops deeper understanding. Sometimes the review approach fills in gaps that you didn’t even know were missing!
What if my Child is Struggling?
What about an older child who is struggling with foundational ideas? RightStart Tutoring is your answer.
The RightStart Tutoring series is for students who are two years or more behind schedule. These kids don’t have time to go through the full year of math to catch up; they need to get the concepts learned, then move into the RightStart Math curriculum to develop and advance their math education.
Whether your child is entering first grade or sixth grade, it’s never too late to build a stronger mathematical foundation. Every day your child spends understanding math instead of simply getting through math is a step toward greater confidence and success.
Take the placement test, find your starting spot, and discover why so many families say they wish they had found RightStart Math sooner.
