2016 Summer Game: Concentrating on One

June 27, 2016

Well! We had a super windy week up here in North Dakota. I picked up tree branches, twigs, and leaves from my lawn every day. I’d have it all cleaned up, then I’d look out the window again and it looked just as bad. Some friends took their camper 45 ... Read More

2016 Summer Game: Piggyback Race

June 15, 2016

How’s your summer been? I was at a family reunion in Prescott, Wisconsin last weekend. We had four generations that day at the farm that my grandparents purchased many many years ago. My dad grew up on this patch of heaven, his sister and husband ... Read More

Dr. Cotter on Subtraction Approaches

June 13, 2016

There are at least eight different ways to subtract multi-digit numbers. Even though a person has learned one method, it is good to explore other methods to enhance understanding. If a child has an accurate and efficient method of subtraction, do ... Read More

Dr. Cotter on What 6 × 3 Means

June 1, 2016

Sometimes 6 × 3 is thought of as “6 groups of 3.” However, consistency with the other arithmetic operations requires a second look. When adding 6 + 3, we start with 6 and transform it by adding 3. When subtracting 6 – 3, we start with 6 and transform ... Read More

Dr. Cotter on Long Division

May 20, 2016

As far as long division is concerned, it no longer has the importance it had in past generations. No one today spends time on their job doing long division. Long division with that guessing component is not used higher mathematics. It is rarely on ... Read More

May 16, 2016

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE checking things off my list. I love to schedule and create lists. For me, lists motivate and inspire me to get things done. Sometimes I make a list just so I can check things off! However, I must admit, not being ... Read More

What our Customers Are Saying

Thank you so much for your RightStart Math Curriculum. I have been using it for 3 years with my son and my daughter is beginning her second year. I love the strategies you use for teaching math and the lessons are fun to teach.

My daughter is 7 and this is our 2nd year to use RightStart Math. She is in 2nd grade and is adding and subtracting 4 digits numbers with trading like it is nothing. She also can do her multiplications. The most amazing thing is that when she is somewhere and has to spend her money she is quick to tell them how much change she needs back. I have seen a lot of teenagers and adults who cannot do thi… Read more

My daughter is in 4th grade this year. Math has always been a struggle for her, as it was for her father. I discovered that she has dyslexia (which is hereditary). I didn’t realize that had any effect on math, but I found out that people with dyslexia cannot learn with rote memorization or sequential skills. This makes it harder for them to remember math facts or how to do algorithms. Before I kne… Read more
